What is Art, Design, and Craft?

Art to me is freedom of expression that is not limited to one form. There is dancing, music, poetry, drawing, painting, sculpting, and so much more forms of art. Art does not have to be man-made, the way tree branches twist and turn in a unique way can be considered art, even flowers and the formation of stones can be art. Art is something that is meant to be shared with friends and family or society. Art comes in many different forms and colors, shapes and sizes. It can be 2-D or 3-D, digital or something physical, can be found in words or within a picture. To me, art can be just about anything in the world that one finds unique, beautiful, or emotional.

Design to me is using forms, shapes, and colors to help create or improve a work of art. Designs can be random swirls or scribbles or a carefully thought out idea. Design can be simple or complicated, something that looks professional or childish. Designs are to be planned and tested, drawn and recreated over and over until there is a design that the artist is satisfied with. I believe designs help give an idea or creation a personality that the audience can see or feel by looking at the artwork as a whole.

Craft to me is something created by hand. That takes not only an amount of skill, but also time, patience, and dedication. Craft can be 2D or 3D, such as a drawing or sculpture. However I do not consider digital works to be a craft, I consider them to be virtual creations and yes works of art but not something crafted. I don’t consider machine made items to be crafts either, to me its something that was handmade or object that may have been machine made but then used to craft something else.

What is Creativity and Knowledge

Knowledge is gaining insight and understanding, to learn and comprehend. Through exploration and testing, we gain knowledge. Creativity allows us to invent new ideas and concepts based on past knowledge. I do think knowledge can occur without creativity. However, I do not believe creativity can happen without knowledge. When I plan out a new design, I often look at past artworks and knowledge of patterns and design terms and concepts to help me create something new. I reflect on my knowledge of what I have learned and what I need to learn to create a great design. I need to know how something works, why it works the ways it does, and its significance before I decide to break it apart and recreate it into something new. Creativity can not work without Knowledge.
