An Artist I Admire

Diego River is one artist I admire. It’s not just his art style that I like, but also the subjects and meaning behind his work. One thing I have always appreciated when it came to Diego Rivera’s work was the remembrance of culture and history. Several of this painting and murals reflect Mexican culture and history, from important moments in history to depict a culture in the then and now (during his time). I am very proud of my Mexican heritage, and my culture influences a big part of my art. One work of art that I enjoy is a mural called Ballad of the Revolution by Diego Rivera. It is about 17,000 ft^2 and is located on the third floor of the Secretaria de Educacion Publica, Mexico City. This mural depicts just about everything that happened during the Mexican Revolution, from the politics to the farm workers, the poor and rich, to families sharing a meal. There is even an image of Emiliano Zapata who played a very important role in the Mexican revolution. The mural isn’t just one large image, it is broken down into sections and wraps all around the room. Each section tells an important part of the Revolution, and each section has its own meaning. They are powerful enough to stand on there own but is absolutely breathtaking when you start to pieces each section together. To this day I am inspired to create works of art that reflect my history and heritage and to understand the importance of never forgetting who we are and where we come from.

During my 2-D color and design class, I was asked to choose a known artist and replicate one of their art pieces. I chose to replicate the Flower Seller by Diego Rivera. I then create two more artworks titled History Repeats. These two other works are based off the Flower Seller and a few similar works by Diego Rivera known as The Flower Carrier and Flower Festival.
